Jahn's return
After being absent from the downtown skyscraper scene since the early 90s, Helmut Jahn is set to make another architectural statement in Chicago. Jahn appears to have abandoned postmodernism on his new building, 600 North Fairbanks, in favor of a modern, glass-curtained, 21st century skyscraper. Another new residential high-rise, The Streeter, is located less than a block from Jahn’s building in the booming Streeterville neighborhood.

The Michigan Avenue street wall will be getting a modern addition too. At just 10 stories, Spertus Institute’s new building won’t have much impact on the famed skyline vista. The streetscape impact, however, will be quite impressive. The neighboring building to the north is a century older and sports a masonry façade broken up into the three divisions of a classical column. In contrast, Spertus’ building will have a slightly disjointed, angular looking glass façade. Will they be a good match or will they clash? Time will tell.
