Miami Beach

John S. Collins, Carl G. Fisher, and the Lummus Brothers incorporated their land as the city of Ocean Beach in 1915
in 1917 the name was changed to Miami Beach
the MacArthur Causeway was completed in 1918, greatly increasing automobile access between the island and mainland
in 1926 much of the city was destroyed by a hurricane
the following 15 years of development created the city’s iconic Art Deco District
during the postwar period Art Deco architecture was considered gaudy and many buildings were lost to Modernist developments
thanks to the work of Barbara Capitman and others, the Miami Beach Architectural District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979
the 1980s brought a renewed interest in Art Deco design and colors, and the city's unique streetscapes featured prominently in the popular television series Miami Vice
2000 census population: 87,933
