Trump trumped?
Donald Trump had better fix his comb-over. It’s been looking a bit disheveled since the announcement of the Fordham Spire. Before the public announcement, Trump’s supertall seemed like a respectable addition to the city’s skyline. But when compared to Calatrava’s proposal, the New Yorker’s building is already looking outdated. If built, the Fordham Spire will signal Chicago’s official acceptance of 21st century skyscrapers. At this point “if” may be the only advantage Trump has, because his building is already under construction. Too bad a different location wasn’t chosen for Calatrava’s spire. Since it is located right on the lake it doesn’t follow the current skyline scheme, where surrounding buildings provide a visual step-up for the supertalls. But I guess change is as eternal as time itself. After all, the location where the river meets the lake is a long neglected area and the geographical reason for the city’s existence in the first place.

Also check out the two newest additions to IIT’s campus in Bronzeville. Pay attention to the different methods used by each architect to address the noise problem associated with passing Green Line trains.
